INSPIRATION Sex Pistols' 'God Save The Queen" 1977… Libertine SS||2014

This year’s exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York ‘Punk: Chaos To Couture’ continues to be an inspiration for fashion designer’s collections, even if this theme has been explored quite a bit for FW 2013||14. The cover of  the Sex Pistols single album 'God Save the Queen" [left], released in 1977 and an anthem of the Punk subculture, has been chosen by Libertine's designer Johnson Hartig to become the main print motif of her collection for SS||2014 [right].

INTO MISSONI… the 'Hat-ology" exhibition in Milan celebrates Anna Piaggi

During Milan fashion week, on saturday September 21th, an exhibition of the legendary hat collection of the late fashion editor Anna Piaggi, has opened at Palazzo Morando in Milan and will continue until November 30th. The exhibition, entitled “Hat-ology”, is curated by her favourite milliner Stephen Jones, who will guide the visitor through the editor’s life one hat at a time: from a McDonald’s baseball cap to creations by Schiaparelli and Chanel Haute Couture, but also featuring Jones’s own designs. The setting of the installation re-creates the style of her eccentric apartment in Milan, in order to give a real taste of how the style icon Piaggi lived. For this particular occasion are being revealed on Missoni Moments, some unpublished pictures from Anna Piaggi’s visits to the home of her friends Ottavio and Rosita Missoni.

INSPIRATION Paco Rabanne 1968… Dolce&Gabbana SS||2014

The Spanish designer Paco Rabanne has been in the sixties the l'enfant terrible of the fashion world, due to the use of metal paper and other unconventional materials in his creations.... and in this picture [left] we see the French singer and fashion icon Françoise Hardy wearing one of his designs. The work of Rabanne might have been a technical inspiration to Dolce&Gabbana and the creation of this SS||2014 metal coin dress [right].

INSPIRATION Stella McCartney SS||2011… Mother of Pearl SS||2014

Thank you for participating Mother of Pearl [right]... but our dear Stella has thought about it all ready in her SS||2011 collection [right]! Well, while NYFW gets more and more blown out of proportion in terms of a ridiculously huge fashion week calendar, it seems that as a result a lot of insignificant fashion material is produced and proposed.

INSPIRATION Vogue US 1970.... Etro SS||2014

1970s FOLK FASHION: The Paisley pattern has been extremely popular in the seventies within the Bohemian chic and folk oriented fashion designers like Zandra Rhodes, who used it in infinite color combinations: a wonderful Natalie Wood photographed by Gianni Penati for the January issue of Vogue US in 1970 [left]. In the same way Rhodes in the seventies has made this Persian pattern hers, also the Italian label Etro has made it their trademark motif and proposes it very frequently since then, like for the next SS||2014.

INSPIRATION Rudi Gernreich 1968… DKNY SS||2014

LOGOMANIA's BACK: Rudi Gernreich's fantastic no-sense-making lettering outfit from 1968, worn in this picture by Peggy Moffitt and photographed by William Claxton [left]…might have been an inspiration for the total-letter look of Donna Karan's second line DKNY for SS||20114 [right].

INSPIRATION Lee Miller 1932… Céline SS|| 2012

Since in my last post I was talking about the Céline SS|| 2012 collection, I also wanted to  share with you an image of Lee Miller, photographed by Man Ray in the 30ties [left], that could have been on the inspiration board of Phoebe Philo and her team while working on this beautiful geometric sweater [right]. Lee Miller has been Man Ray's photographic assistant, as well as his lover, model and muse. While she was in Paris, she began her own photographic studio, often taking over Man Ray's fashion assignments to enable him to concentrate on his painting. In fact, many of the photographs taken during this period and credited to Man Ray were actually taken by Miller. She was an active participant in the surrealist movement, with her witty and humorous images.

INTO MISSONI… 'Adam & Yves" By Gladys Perint Palmer

Please welcome the first INTO MISSONI post, a new segment that celebrates one of the most amazing Italian heritage brands and takes part in the Missoni Moments project that has been launched today:

Gladys Perint Palmer is a respected fashion illustrator and journalist who has just published a delightful book, Adam & Yves, with a selection of her irreverent drawings and memories of the past decades of fashion. Her talent lies in the way she looks at things and how, with a unique sense of humour, she transforms her opinion on fashion into elegant sketches and sparkling comments that touch the heart. So far, Palmer has published at least ten fashion books, sold in London, Paris, and Milan, and has contributed to the most respected fashion publications, such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, L’Officiel and The New Yorker, in addition to her work as Executive Director of Fashion at San Francisco’s Academy of Art. Included in the book are illustrations of various Missoni collections, such as Missoni SS||1991 [left] and SS||1994 [right].
In an age of instantaneity “Adam and Yves” draws attention to the heritage of fashion and illustrates – with ink, pastels and passion – the influence the past will always exert on us. It is a book that has already become a collectable.

INSPIRATION Vogue 1966... Richard Chai Love SS||2014

Today I came across this amazing Vogue editorial from the November issue 1966, photographed by Horst P. Horst in front of George Segal's sculpture 'Walking Man", in which the German top model and it-girl Veruschka von Lehndorff is wearing a Gunther Jaeckel outfit [left]. That outfit reminded me immediately of one outfit of the fun and bright colored collection of Richard Chai Love from SS||2014 NYFW [right].
