THE FINEST... re-post from 2010|Sunday||July 11

THE FINEST... a segment, wherein I republish some post from the past you have visited or liked the most. It is a little 'best of' segment, that has been re-interpreted through a delightful animation, created by my dear friend School Of Bad Ideas... Enjoy!

Original post:
This years Christian Dior haute couture show with the 'visit at the flower-shop' inspiration is just wonderful. The setting, the flower-dresses and the cellophane hair styling are so fun and ironic.

INSPIRATION Marilyn Monroe 1962... Madonna for Versace SS||2005

A beautiful picture of a ravishing Marilyn Monroe talking on the phone, taken by George Barris in 1962 [that sadly will become the year of her death]... might have been an inspiration for Versace's SS||2005 campaign by Mario Testino, featuring pop star Madonna in a silk shirt shirt that is very similar to the one Marilyn is wearing.

INSPIRATION Veruschka in Chuck Howard 1966... Louis Vuitton SS||2013

Infinite were my options [all OP Art related of course] to show matches to the Damier slash 60ties collection of Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton SS||2013 [right]… but somehow I felt in love with this semi-trasparent chiffon dress by Chuck Howard for Townley from 1966 [left]. In this picture we see top model Veruschka von Lehndorff, photographed by Bert Stern, in an editorial for Vogue US.

INSPIRATION Jean Paul Goude 1981... Jean Paul Gaultier SS||2013

A wonderful picture of singer, model and actress Grace Jones, that has been taken by fashion photographer, director and graphic designer Jean Paul Goude in 1981 [left]… a picture that for sure was the inspiration for this homage 'tuxedo" outfit from Jean Paul Gaultier for SS||2013 [right].

INSPIRATION Neil Barrett FW 2012||13... 3.1 Phillip Lim PRE FW 2013||14

The wonderful layered wintercoat from Neil Barrett's FW 2012||13 collection [left]... could have been an inspiration to the pre-collection of 3.1 Phillip Lim for FW 2013||14.

LOVE IT| WISH IT|| SHOP IT... the Saint Laurent 'Classic Betty Clous" bag

Hedi Slimane is the fashion worlds wunderkind, who in 2001 has launched successfully the male line 'Dior Homme" and created with it a whole new esthetic language for the male and female wardrobe [in addition he has to take some responsibility for Karl Lagerfeld's extreme dieting to fit into his collections]. After leaving Dior, Hedi Slimane worked intensively  on his artistic career as photographer, until his glorious comeback to the fashion world as artistic director of Saint Laurent Paris this year. It goes without saying that all his creations will become fashion icons immediately. Me for instance, I just love the 'Classic Betty Clous' medium shoulder bag [1450,00 Euro] the most, also because dedicated to monsieur's Yves Saint Laurent's lifetime friend and muse Betty Catroux.

INSPIRATION André Courrèges 1968... Sportmax SS||2013

OVERSIZE OPTICAL CHECKS: A beautiful outfit designed by French Couturier André Courrèges, photographed in 1968 by Christian Skrein [left]… and a look from the SS||2013 collection for the Italian brand Sportmax [right].

INSPIRATION Versace FW 1987||88… Balmain SS||2013

80'S OVERSIZED OPTICAL: This amazing Versace AD from 1987, photographed by Richard Avedon and featuring Christy Turlington [left]… could have been one of the inspirational pictures for the Balmain collection SS||2013, showing the exact type of silhouette and a similar pattern choice.

INSPIRATION Irving Penn 1950… Patrick Demarchelier 2008

This iconic picture of wonderful Lisa Fonssagrives, photographed for Vogue in 1950 by her husband and fashion photographer Irving Penn, wearing a petal dress by Cristóbal Balenciaga [left]… might have been an inspiration for Patrick Demarchelier's Dior Haute Couture SS 2008 photo shoot, featuring  model Jac Jagaciak [right].

INSPIRATION Jean Shrimpton 1964... Freja Beha Erichsen for Zara FW 2012||13

FAKE FUR FOR FAST FASHION: The beautiful model and fashion icon Jean Shrimpton is wearing in this picture, taken by David Bailey in 1964, a fake fur coat, that was a typical fashion item in the sixties [left]. The importance of the faux-fur revival as a huge trend for FW 2012||13 can be noticed as also picked up by the fast fashion label Zara in their collections [after been proposed by fashion houses like Emilio Pucci or Marni] and also picked up in their last campaign featuring Danish super model Freja Beha Erichsen [right].

INTO THE SAME IDEA... Sportmax and Véronique Leroy SS||2013

PERFORATION COAT: in addition to the huge trend of different sized and colored net material used in countless collections for SS||2013, also the perforated leather coats might be a thing... as seen at Sportmax using a graphic houndstooth pattern [left] and at Véronique Leroy with her lips motif [right].

INSPIRATION Pierre Cardin 1968... Erdem FW 2012||13

The all-over pattern styling that was fashionable in the sixties and that the fashion designer Pierre Cardin proposed in 1968 [left]... might have been an inspiration for the collection for FW 2012||13 of Erdem [right].
Cardin was known for his avant-garde style and his Space Age designs. He used geometric shapes and motifs in his designs, often ignoring the female form. He advanced into unisex fashions, sometimes experimental, and not always practical, for example he has created the "bubble dress" in 1954.

With this post I recommend the book:

The porcelain lamp ASHOKA by Ettore Sottsass from 1981 [left] might have been the inspiration for the multicolor block stripes dress by Balenciaga [right].
