INSPIRATION PIERRE JOSEPH REDOUTé... Stella McCartney Resort 2011

Anemone 'Les choix des plus belles fleures' by Pierre Joseph Redouté [left] might have been the inspiration for this beautiful print in Stella McCartney's 2011 resort collection [right]. Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a Belgian painter and botanist, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison. He was nicknamed "The Raphael of flowers". He was an official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and he continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. Redouté survived the turbulent political upheaval to gain international recognition for his precise renderings of plants, which remain as fresh in the early 21st century as when first painted.

INSPIRATION Diana Vreeland's living room 1985... Jeremiah Goodman

Diana Vreeland and her living room, photographed in 1985 [left], inspired the artist Jeremiah Goodman to paint the 'Diana Vreeland, Garden in Hell sitting Room' [right].
Below, a scene that takes place in this room in the movie 'Infamous' from 2006, a story about Truman Capote.
Diana Vreeland (1903-1989) was a noted columnist and editor in the field of fashion. As the fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar, Vreeland commanded and reshaped the content of fashion journalism. Later, she became the editor-in-chief of Vogue and curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Several years before she passed away, she wrote her autobiography, D.V. Avedon said at the time of her death: 'She was and remains the only genius fashion editor'.
Jeremiah Goodman was born in 1922 in upstate New York and currently lives and paints in Manhattan. Goodman has painted illustrations of interior spaces for nearly every design magazine from the 1950s through the present.
His moody gouache paintings “interpreted” the homes of international luminaries and spaces created by global design leaders: Bruce Weber, Edward Albee, Yves Saint Laurent, Mario Buatta, Diana Vreeland, the Duchess of Windsor, Greta Garbo and Cecil Beaton.

INSPIRATION 'Interiors' Woody Allen 1978... FW 2010//11 trend minimalism

A visual inspiration to this seasons minimalism trend can be found in Woody Allen’s movie INTERIORS from 1978. It talks about the interiors of its characters, but at the same time about the architectural interiors of their environment…all cold, plain and sterile. The movie is a real mood board in motion, in which every single shot is beautiful and stylish, while it talks about the lack of emotions or happiness.
It looks and sounds very much like an Ingmar Bergman film...with its protagonists, who are members of a middle-class New York family, socially disconnected from the world around them as they are emotionally and psychically disconnected from themselves and from one another. The clothes here are perfect for a late 70ties costume research, with its American understated city style, where everything is reduced to its most fundamental but sophisticated features, all in cool grey, black and beige tones.
[Minimalism is a twentieth century art movement and style, that emphasizes the idea of reducing. Every work is stripped down to the minimum number of colors, values, shapes, lines and textures. No attempt is made to represent or symbolize any other objects or experience.]

INSPIRATION black orchid... CHRISTIAN DIOR HAUTE COUTURE FW 2010//11

This years Christian Dior haute couture show with the 'visit at the flower-shop' inspiration is just wonderful. The setting, the flower-dresses and the cellophane hair styling are so fun and ironic.

INSPIRATION Frances McLaughlin-Gill 1949... PRADA FW 2010//11

A beautiful wool outfit by Carolyn Schnurer photographed by Frances McLaughlin [left] and a reinterpretation of Prada FW 2010//11 [right]...
Born in1919, Frances McLaughlin-Gill became a fashion photographer and producer of television commercials. She studied at the Pratt Institure during the Depression and she was a staff photographer for Conde Nast publications 1944-1955 and went on to produce television commercials between 1964-1973.
Frances built a successful career beginning in the 1940s at Vogue and she was the first woman under contract to Vogue. One of Frances’ enduring abilities was to develop empathy for models in their work and foster real friendships. In a male dominated industry, this set Frances apart from the male fashion photographers who, regardless of talent could often treat women in their work as another object in a still-life, a vehicle for the photographers vision. Frances made the models to be real people. They look like thinking, feeling human beings who look gorgeous in the clothes, they’re not just vacuous, air-headed clothes hangers.

INSPIRATION Claire McCardell 1944... BOTTEGA VENETA SS//2010

Tomas Maier for his SS//2010 collection [right] liked this Claire McCardell draped crouch [left].
Claire McCardell (1905-1958) created informal but sophisticated and beautiful clothes with a functional design, which reflected the lifestyle of American women ...all within the constrains of mass-production. She is known for her warp-around sashes, monastic dresses and harem pajamas. We are waiting for a smart fashion group to recognize how much the contemporary look of Claire McCardell could be ready for a re-lauch. This brand would make happy all the young women, who like to dress in this sophisticated Chloé-Celine-COS casualness.
