INSPIRATION No.21's iconic sweater… Zara FW 2013||14

For everybody who hasn't got yet one of the must have sweaters of No.21, the label created by the soon to be creative director of Rochas Alessandro dell'Acqua [left],… can find right now at Zara  an interesting knock-off version [right]. The only thing missing in the much cheaper version is of course the number 21.

INSPIRATION a TV test screen for color settings… Jeremy Scott SS||2014

The as always super ironic fashion show of Jeremy Scott for SS|| 2014, began with the beep of a technical disturbance which set the mood for the first color blocked leather outfits [right]…. inspired by a TV test screen for color settings [left]. I can't wait to see the first collection of the soon to be creative director of Moschino and how he will continue the heritage of a brand that has be founded by the most ironic of designers ever, Franco Moschino.

INSPIRATION Moschino FW 1987||88… Marc Jacobs' AD campaign SS||2008

The late fashion designer Franco Moschino is remembered for his highly ironic, witty and provocative designs which always poked fun at the fashion establishment. The final line up of his FW 1987||88 collection, for example, showcased the models wearing nothing but huge Moschino shopping bags [left]. A similar idea had Marc Jacobs for his SS||2008 advertising campaign, in which celebrity royalty Victoria Beckham was photographed by Juergen Teller, in Marc Jacobs' shopping bags and shoe boxes [right].

INTO THE ARCHIVES... Yves Saint Laurent SS||1971 and Saint Laurent SS||2014

A wonderful editorial published in Vogue UK's June 1971 issue, photographed by Peter Knapp, is featuring super model Cathee Dahmen wearing Yves Saint Laurent's legendary red lips print [left].... which the new creative director of Saint Laurent,  Hedi Slimane, has decided to make revive for SS||2014 [right]. Maybe a little bit too close to FW 2012||13, a season many designers have done patterns inspired by Surrealism and tromp l'oeil motifs, due to the Schiaparelli||Prada exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2012.

INSPIRATION Thom Browne SS||2013... A.W.A.K.E. by Natalia Alaverdian SS|| 2014

Do you remember the funny and preppy motifs, like the dying whale print, of Thom Browne's SS||2013 collection [left]?... well, I do... and so did the editor of Harpers Bazaar Russia and fashion design newbie Natalia Alaverdian [left, in a picture by Garance Doré] for her second collection of her line A.W.A.K.E.

INSPIRATION Azzedine Alaïa SS||1986... Balmain SS||2013

What amazing denim wear! I just came across the Azzedine Alaïa motorcycle jacket suit from his SS||1986 collection [left]... and it immediately reminded me of the eighties volumes and looks of the jeans outfits of Balmain's SS||2013 collection [right]. The fashion museum Palais Galliera in Paris has just dedicated a wonderful retrospective dedicated to the influential Paris-based couturier Alaia in which 70 iconic dresses were on display and were underscoring in a wonderful way the sculptural quality of the dresses.

INSPIRATION Norma Kamali SS||1983… Derek Lam SS||2014

Another geometric pattern based on a square shape is the Vichy pattern, that can be seen as a summer tartan, and that has appeared in various versions on the SS||2014 catwalks... like in this playful black and white Derek Lam outfit with a sleek vs. African twist [right]. This look recalled a very cool styling and pattern vibe I have seen in a photo shoot of Norma Kamali's SS||1983 collection [right]. This is the type of inspiration I consider a real inspiration, the one that takes the essence of a researched image and turns it into something new and fairly different.

INSPIRATION Issey Miyake FW 2013||14... Zara FW 2013||14

Tartan and plaid patterns are huge this winter  due to the Punk and Grunge trends that have surfaced this winter on many catwalks. Another type of plaid motive, more graphic and in unusual color combinations, has been proposed by Japanese designer Issey Miyake [left] and has been immediately confirmed to be a 'thing' by fast fashion label Zara [right].
