INSPIRATION Yayoi Kusama... David Koma FW 2011//12

Polka dots are a big trend for the upcoming winter season, but no collection reminds me so strongly of Yayoi Kusama's artwork [left] like the one of David Koma [right].

Yayoi Kusama is known for her intricately patterned pieces and in this picture we see a zoom of her famous Pumpkin sculpture series.
Born in 1929, Kusama is considered one of the greatest Japanese contemporary artists. Her work across a wide array of disciplines is characterised by an obsession with pattern and repetition, particularly evident in her signature "infinity nets" of polka dot patterning. [She has described herself as an “obsessive artist”.]
Kusama’s work is based in Conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. Kusama is also a published novelist and poet, and has created notable work in film and fashion design. On November 12, 2008 Christies New York sold a work by her for $5.1 million, a record for a living female artist.

With this post I recommend the book:
